Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized Anteater, prehensile tail, long sticky tongue adapted to extract ants and termites

Habitat:

forests from Mexico to northern South America

Notes:

I spotted this Northern Tamandua at La Selva. It was sleeping on a large tree along the main river at the Biological Station. I stayed with it for over half an hour, waiting for it to occasionally wake up and change positions. That's when I was able to get some better shots of it. I haven't seen many Northern Tamanduas in my life and this was one of my best experiences with on.

So nice to see so many old "friends" in your pictures from Costa Rica. I have seem many of them, but usually in such thick jungle it is impossible to get a foto. Yours are fabulous. Thanks so much for sharing Dan.
I'm so jealous. I really want to see one of these guys
Thank you Sukanya, Mel, Zlatan, Ingrid and Jae!
Awesome spotting and equally awesome photos, dandoucette.
Fantastic! so comfortable lounging on the branches!
Most wonderful pictures, I didn't realise that they could climb trees.
