Description:

It sure looks like a Giraffe Weevil to me. I was reading today about the Giraffe Weevil being from Madagascar, and only discovered in 2008, and I remembered this photo I took in South Korea in June of 2008. I couldn't find any mention of it living outside of Madagascar. What's going on here?

Update: Mystery Solved! I think it's a shame though that the Giraffe Weevil of Madagascar gets all the glory, while it's damn near impossible to find any info on this nearly identical species.

Habitat:

Mountains, deciduous forest

Notes:

Observed June 2008 in South Korea

Species ID Suggestions

Leaf rolling weevil

Paracycnotrachelus chinensis

Welcome zepher. It seems there are several other 'giraffe' type genera under Attelabidae - eg. Cycnotrachelus, Paracycnotrachelus are from east Asia. Here is Paracycnotrachelus chinensis from near Seoul. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9609780
Quick update, it seems it was actually described in 1860 by Henri Jekel in Madagascar. I don't know why several articles claim it wasn't discovered until 2008. I still can't find any record of it living anywhere else.
Hi Zepher. Welcome to Project Noah. That is a great picture. I think you're right when you say it "looks like" a Giraffe Weevil. It does have similarities, but all the pictures of Giraffe Weevils I can find show a smooth reddish shell (elytra). Your picture shows a darker, brownish red color with grooves. I'm going to poke around a little, but weevils aren't my thing. I'll let you know if I find something. Perhaps someone else can help you out.
