Field Notes

Description:

My brother went to Pennsylvania, to visit some of his relatives. On his free time, he would go into the woods, to photograph things, that pertained to Mother Nature. My brother found three Luna Moth cocoons, and some other moth cocoons, from some other species. A couple of the Luna Moth cocoons, were wrapped in green leaves. One Luna Moth cocoon, was one and three eights of an inch long, and three fourths of an inch wide.

Habitat:

In the United States, it is found in every eastern state, from Maine south to Florida, and west to eastern Texas, and west to North Dakota. Usually found in forested areas.

Notes:

Luna antennae, are quadripectinate ( comb-like on four sides ). Eggs: The slightly oval eggs, are white, mottled with the brown adhesive. Larva: The bright green, full grown caterpillars, are 55-70 mm. in length. Just prior to pupation, caterpillars turn a reddish color. The single-layered cocoon, is wrapped in leaves. The adults, are strongly attracted to lights. Capterpillars, are solitary, and develope through five instars..
