Field Notes

Description:

Archaeoprepona demophon, the one-spotted prepona, banded king shoemaker, or demophon shoemaker is a butterfly belonging to the Nymphalidae family.

They are very fast-flying butterflies. The males perch head down on tree trunks, wings usually half open. From this vantage, they chase any other male that comes by, usually returning to the same perch.

I saw this butterfly over several days, feasting on a rotten part of a mango, on a tree by the lodge.

Habitat:

near a lodge in tropical montane forest
