Field Notes

Description:

Zosis geniculata (Olivier, 1789). This spider belongs to the family Uloboridae and, according to Wikipedia, spiders of this family do not kill their prey by poison, but by wrapping them and compressing them in silk. They then cover the prey in digestive enzymes and ingest it. Another interesting point about these spiders is that they do not trap their prey using "sticky" silk webs. Their webs are made of "cribellate" silk which is "fuzzy" and prey gets tangled in the fine hairs of the silk.

Habitat:

This small spider was spotted on Philodendron sp. climbing on the trunk of an old mango tree in the rice mill front yard.
