Field Notes

Description:

The body is about ½" long, and the wingspread about ¾", but I am mystified as to whether it is a wasp, moth, or maybe even a fly since it does appear to have little haltere knobs (flight stabilizers) (see #2). But then, there are the antennae, curled down like rams horns. The abdomen curls up rather sharply, visible in the side view.
What about a Snipe Fly (wrong antennae, though, and eyes too small)?

Habitat:

This was on the side of the house, in the rainforest in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, in extreme western Belize.

Notes:

I Googled images quite awhile for this, but no results.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

Definitely a fly. Maybe a Bibionidae (March fly) - but you would want to get one of the fly guys to tell you for sure.
