Hazelnut
Corylus cornuta
47.1783, -123.959
Field Notes
Description:
This is a picture of its catkins, in the winter. The trees can reach 4–8 metres (13–26 ft) tall with stems 10–25 centimetres (3.9–9.8 in) thick with smooth gray bark. Although, in my case, the trees are covered in moss and all I see are green trunks.
Habitat:
It grows in dry woodlands and forest edges.
Notes:
I usually take photos of this hazelnut grove in the late summer and fall, because that's when it's covered with nuts. I never noticed the catkins, before, and they were especially beautiful on this sunny winter day.
