Field Notes

Description:

There are at least eight Proboscis Bats in this photo, but there may be more They have amazingly long, sharp noses, and the zig-zag white markings in their coats provide great camouflage.

Habitat:

The photo was taken from a pontoon boat on the dammed Macal River, up into an overhanging face of rock. This was my best shot from the moving boat.

Notes:

Because of one of their common names, River Bat, I suspect this is a common type of roost. It IS well protected from predation since it hangs out over the water at a slant.
