Field Notes

Description:

Pale markings on body just visible through wings and large size along with larvae and pupae in our pond all go to suggest that this could be the recently arrived Tiger Mosquito. We have had to remove the larvae and pupae from our pond and hope the fish and frog will deal with the rest.

Habitat:

Balcony, attracted from the surrounding countryside by nightlight.
Garden on limestone outcrop in foothills of los Serranos mountains.

Beautiful mosquito, but it's thankfully not Aedes albopictus. It is a male Culicinae (subfamily) mosquito. Here's a link for Ae. albopictus (they have very dark coloration with a distinct white stripe on their black thorax): http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/aquatic/asian_tiger.htm
