Field Notes

Description:

A bright display for a drab orthopteran. This female is apterous but retains two cryptic grey tegmen (forewings) to reveal brightly banded abdomen for startling effect.
The male has functional wings and is more elongate and enjoys the same patterns.

Habitat:

Montane, on Sencio (fireweed).

I hadn't noticed that the hind wings are missing. Even more amazing.
Thankyou Chun, Lauren and Mark. Notice the flying wings are entirely absent. These are quite common and the winged males do the same thing.
..reminds me of the old 'witches breeches' :)
Amazing spotting, Martin! This definitely stands out in the trending page.
