Field Notes

Description:

Female:- The upper parts are brownish grey. Forehead spot is buff-white. Wings are tinged browner with two broken buff-white bars throughfliight feathers; tail dark brown with whitish outershafts. Underside is pale grey; breast sometimes flushed rose-pink, belly and undertail whiter. Eye, bill and feet, as male.

Habitat:

Breeds in wet mountain and coastal forests of Southeastern Australia, north to Macpherson Range, Queensland and south to Southwestern Victoria. Out-of-breeding migration to Clarke Range, Queensland and the Mt. Lofty - Flinders Ranges, South Australia. Amongst Hickory Wattle; Winter Apple and Native Mint, at the Kokoda Track, Kingaroy, is where I sighted this Rose Robin.

Notes:

They have a series of low, weak, piping notes, or a dry ticking, like the snapping of a small twig, by both sexes; chirring in alarm. Song is a low, reedy series of trills, on same pitch; reee-areee-areee, by male. This female was a little more inquisitive than her mate.
