Field Notes

Description:

A Hopper about 1 cm in length with unusually cryptic markings. Spittlebug of the Family Aphrophoridae. These rather large Spittlebugs only make the frothy spittle as nymphs. The adults however, can also produce a massive amount of liquid when actively feeding and are responsible for what have been called "Crying Trees" ("Arboles llorones"). Just 70 adults can produce up to 1 liter of liquid an hour! This could be Cephisus variolosus, a very variable species complex which is native to Mexico and occurs down through Panama (http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2012/f/zt03497p059.pdf).

Habitat:

Came to the lights of a store, Axtla de Terrazas near Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
