Field Notes

Description:

Small, red/black sheetweb spider. These spiders will build a blanket-like web and sit on the underside waiting to ambush unwary prey that happen to fall into it. The sheets have scaffolding strands that knock the prey into the sheet. These spiders will actually bite the prey through the web, injecting it with venom to paralyze it.

Habitat:

Woodland habitat. Actually spotted on a bridge rail going into the timber.

Notes:

Seems like there may be a bit of ant mimicry with this one, or is it just me?
