Description:
This amazing green pear-shaped wasp nest is about 5" wide and 6" high. The amazing thing is that it is green, as most wasp nests range from dark gray through tans to creamy white. In photo#4, you can just barely see two wasps, black with tan/orange wings.
Habitat:
It was hanging over the water of an Amazon River lagoon, and the photo was taken from a dugout canoe.
Notes:
I'm guessing the wasps built it with processed green leaves, making it green, but most wasps use processed dead/brown leaves or chewed wood. I would think green leaves would turn moldy in the humid Amazon Basin, but if that is what they used, apparently not. Ideas, anyone? I've linked to a cool time-lapse video here.
