Field Notes

Description:

The green heron is a short stocky bird, as compared to other herons. It is hunched over at the neck and shoulders. Colors and markings are as per the photos.

Habitat:

This bird was spotted at a lake at Desert Springs in Palm Desert, CA. The lake is on a golf course, with virtually no fish of the type these birds generally eat. We spotted it over a period of 3 days, and assume it must have been eating bugs and insects. The closest large body of water is the Salton Sea, about 30 miles away...which is more friendly to herons and other wading birds.

Notes:

Most green herons we have spotted in the past are in areas of heavy brush, and generally well hidden. Per the photos, this bird was in the open and easy to spot.

Did you see the Rare bird alert about the Streaked-back Oriole in Yuma? I tried to find it but I was never there at the right time when it showed because I was with non birders on a schedule. Also 2 Ruddy Ground Doves in Welton, AZ
