Field Notes

Description:

Little blue herons are born white and stay white for almost a year, so you could easily mistake them for the all-white snowy egrets. You have to look at their legs and beaks to identify them. Juvenile little blue herons have pale legs and pale beaks, unlike the snowy’s more colorful legs and beak. The adult little blue heron is blue all over. As their adult feathers begin to grow in after the first year, little blues are often referred to as “calico.” “pied,” or “piebald.

Habitat:

This juvenile little blue heron was spotted sitting on a pier in Altonna, Florida
