Field Notes

Description:

Three violet-blue petals, and 6 "hairy" stamens.

Notes:

Spiderwort flowers have a short life, blooming only for a single day. The stem produces around 20 buds that bloom in succession, so the plant appears to always be in bloom!

The sticky mucilaginous sap dries to produces threads reminiscent of spider silk giving this plant its name. The other common name, cow slobber, is somewhat less refined.
