Field Notes

Description:

This bird was gray, white, and light brown in color. It appears to have a stout black bill, and white arcs around the eyes.

Habitat:

I spotted this bird sitting on the sand along the shoreline.

Notes:

I would really like some help with an i.d. I did quite a bit of research but to no avail. I had no idea there was such variation in the plumage of shorebirds between juveniles, adults, and breeding adults. I was thinking that this is possibly a Laughing gull or perhaps a Franklin's gull. Then again maybe it is not a gull at all...lol.

Species ID Suggestions

Laughing Gull

Leucophaeus atricilla

Comments (2)

The Franklin is more apt to be inland, have a smaller bill and the eye arcs can be more pronounced
