Scale insect
-37.8164, 145.194
Field Notes
Description:
These two insects are exposing their abdomens for some unknown reason. Can anyone suggest why this is so? Scale insects are hemipteran bugs and feed on sap. They produce a waxy cover (lerp) for protection.
Habitat:
The lower surface of a Eucalyptus leaf. Their presence is easily revealed by the dissolution of the green chlorophyll surrounding eacg insect. Notice this effect in another species. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/19274147
