Field Notes

Description:

This is one of the saltwater mussels in the Family Mytilidae. It is a bivalve mollusk The shell is elongated and asymmetrical compared with clams, which are often more or less rounded or oval. This one is ribbed and is about 3 inches in length and about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.

Habitat:

It was observed on the beach on a barrier island on the South Carolina coast. It was sticking partially out of a the mud on the beach at Hunting Island State Park.

Notes:

It has the shape of an Atlantic Ribbed Mussel, but the color looks different. I would appreciate any help with obtaining a more precise identification.
