Field Notes

Description:

Cassida circumdata (Chrysomelidae; Cassidinae). This species of Tortoise Beetle is recognisable by the iridescent green/gold and black markings on the underside of the elytra (wing covers). Although the colours are always the same (as far as I know), there appears to be a great variety of patterns. When I photographed this mating pair, back in 2017, I thought that I was looking at sexual dimorphism. However, I soon learned that the colour patterns have nothing to do with gender, in this species.

Habitat:

This copulating pair of Tortoise Beetles was spotted, in the rice mill back yard, on Water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) which is called Kangkong, in the Philippines. Plant identification is from http://www.stuartxchange.org/Kangkong.....
