Field Notes

Description:

Bulging eyes. Blue-spots and a love for mud! You can also see their burrows and turrets. Apparently pugnacious about territory but I saw no tussle. These fish wriggle around and also make short jumps.

Habitat:

The last shot shows the actual habitat...beyond that is a clayey, muddy expanse that ends in the waters of the River Hooghly and this is where I saw the turrets or observation posts of the mudskippers. The photos of the mudskippers were taken from a height...and then, I went around (because to jump down was dangerous) to reach the banks of the river but was unable to reach the exact spot where I saw these fish...my feet were getting trapped in the soggy mud.

Notes:

We don't get to see structures made by fishes very often...I was lucky to get shots of these territorial markers and observation posts or turrets.

Thank you Neil...the best place to see these up close is the Sunderbans area! I first saw these here as a BSc student...DECADES ago...we collected a few too.
They are so energetic and cute....nice spotting mam....👍
Awesome spotting, Sukanya. I would love to see these. They look like such little characters.
