Field Notes
Description:
It is a perennial plant, with numerous woody stems at its base. Stems lying on the ground and woody at the base, 10-40 cm, ash-white in color, covered with a dense blanket of whitish hairs. Leaves resting directly on the stems, more or less oval in shape and edged with or without teeth. Flowers arranged in groups of 5 to 20, with a whitish cover. Four purple or pinkish-lilac petals. Seeds of small size, dark brown, ovoid in shape and with a rough surface.
Habitat:
In dunes next to the Mediterranean Sea. The sea wallflower occupies coastal dune systems, where the wind and salinity are of great intensity and even in rocky or stony areas.
Notes:
It is a plant with a spectacular flowering, where each specimen produces dozens of flowers that cover large areas and stain the beaches purple. Its reproduction is basically by seeds that are dispersed by the wind given their small size.
