Field Notes
Description:
The manatee is a large marine mammal with an egg-shaped head, flippers and a flat tail who live in water. Manatees are also known as sea cows. Manatees need warm water because they are so large. Manatees have very little body fat, so they are sensitive to cold water. They cannot tolerate temperatures below 20° C (68° F) for long periods of time.
Habitat:
At this time of year (January 2016), the manatees are at Blue Spring State Park in Florida. The water temperature at the spring is 72 degrees.
Notes:
Interesting fact, they are more closely related to elephants.
