Field Notes

Description:

Fourth instar development. 6 to 7 mm long. Black segmented head, red thorax with black spots starting to grow together into a single pattern. Found this colony of nymphs on the underside of a holly tree leaf. When disturbed, they seemed to move together in a procession instead of scattering. The nymphs hunt this way, often overwhelming much larger prey such as potato beetles and other stink bugs.

Habitat:

Deciduous Forest
