Field Notes

Description:

It is a medium to small sized butterfly in the family (Hesperiidae). The wings are orange and with a black border and a black spot near the thorax part of forewings. The hindwings are orange with a thick black border. This specimen is male recognized by smaller size and males having more orange while females are mostly black and brown.

Habitat:

Suburban, Fort Worth, Texas. Sitting on Chinese lantern leaves, (Physalis alkekengi).

Notes:

This skipper is common in the southern United States ranging south through Mexico and Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Brazil, but the sub-species in this area is (Atalopedes campestris huron) that has a slightly different pattern and DNA difference.
