Field Notes

Description:

3rd instar nymph of the southern green stink bug, ~ 7mm long, with lines of green spots on the elytra.

Habitat:

Leeward tropical valley.

Notes:

Spotted on vegetation just off the uphill end of Keaau Homesteads Road in Leeward Oahu. Identified locally as "some kind of stink bug."

This nymph does not appear to be true bug (Hemiptera), because the tell-tale "half wing" look does not emerge until the 5th nymph stage.

Thanks, Jakubko. You've enabled me to update the spotting.
The locals were correct—this is a stink bug nymph in the order Hemiptera. This species, though not native, has been introduced into Hawaii. Here is a nymph that matches yours more closely: http://bugguide.net/node/view/360574/bgimage
