Field Notes

Description:

I found this lizard - skink? - under a slab of old spilled concrete. It was very still and sluggish, but it was probably also cold (we had an ice storm two nights ago). After several minutes, it slowly turned around and crawled under the dirt lifted by the concrete. In looking at my pictures now, I can't see any eyes. Where are they?

In the first photo, let your eyes go up right over the end of its toes and you will see a gray circle above the white stripe - that is its eye.
