Field Notes

Description:

This Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill is a large bird, about the size of a chicken, with a long narrow tail, beautifully marked black and white mantle, and a remarkable yellow bill. The "horn", which is a ridge or casque along the top of the bill, extends the whole length of the bill so it isn't very visible. The red face and ferocious-looking beak make it look a bit angry.

Habitat:

It was spotted hopping around in a tree at an oasis in the northern area thornvelt of Kruger National Park in South Africa.
