Field Notes

Description:

The first time I have seen one on a nest. Its partner was not there, but I did see it about a week later when they both were walking in the water in search of food.

Habitat:

Pond with small trees (maybe wax myrtle) and lots of cattails and lily pads.

Thanks machi. With so much destruction happening every where, that's good to hear.
Nice series Machi especially the habitat shot. Good luck birdies.
Thanks everyone! And Leuba, this pond doesn't have any alligators and people don't often go anywhere near this pond, so I think it is relatively safe for them. We see a pair walking around the area each year, so I assume they are using this pond as a nesting spot year after year, but I am not sure. I have seen 1-2 juveniles with a pair of adults each year as well.
The nest looks so vulnerable - guess they know what they're doing ! Great spotting.
