Field Notes

Description:

Dark green Stink Bug about 1 cm in length. Its green coloring exactly matches the leaves of its environment, so it isn't easy to spot. The underside however, is practically psychedelic. It has yellow lines on the wing covers and the tips of the pronotal horns are yellow. The head is lined in yellow with white antennae and the legs are red. Some nymphs were also present (last picture), still too young to show wing pads. The nymphs have the same lines on the head, white antennae and red legs. Their undersides however are still green. Family Pentatomidae.

Habitat:

Forest, Chorreadero Park, Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, Mexico.

Notes:

This species has an elaborate little white pocket to hold its proboscis when not in use. Normally the proboscis lies flat against the underside of the abdomen. This one is tucked into its fancy little holder. See pictures 1 and 5. In the first picture, the proboscis is contained. In the 5th picture it is out of its pocket.
