Field Notes

Description:

This one was about 10 inches across (they can grow to 24 inches) and covered with pink and blue spines.

Habitat:

Spotted at low tide at the Point Loma Tide Pools, which is part of the Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, California.

Notes:

The seastar is found along the western shore of North America from southern California to British Columbia. Prefers rocky shores where it can prey on mollusk.
