Field Notes
Description:
Family: Nymphalidae. Subfamily: Phyciodes. Orange, yellow, black striped black and white antennae with black and red antennae knobs. Wingspan: 21-34 mm (up to 1.33 inches). Upperside is orange is black borders. Underside of hindwing has dark marginal patch containing a light-colored crescent. Adults: nectar of variety of plants including asters, swamp milkweed and dogbane.
Habitat:
Meadow with abundant flowers and weeds. Also found in pastures, road sides, vacant lots, open pine woods. Range: Most of USA (except west coast), Parts of Mexico and Southern Canada especially Ontario.
