Wildlife Spotting

Most computer crashes are caused by registry errors and can be recovered with out losing any data. For safety, I copy pictures from the cameras on a daily basis but do not erase them from the camera card. When the memory card is full I copy the entire contents again to a separate external hard drive which is then switched off after verifying that everything is there. Only then do I reformat the memory card for further use. The external hard drive acts as an original negative, the copies I make to the PC being working copies. I always do data back-ups with the internet disconnected. If you reformat a hard drive to resolve a computer crash you will lose everything. Most operating systems have other options. A system restore will reset your computer to an earlier time when all was well without losing any data, but it will lose recent programs, although they can be re-installed. Nowadays there is also an option to restore your PC to the day you purchased it but without losing any data. I have done one or the other of these several times on several computers and have always found all data intact, although a lot of programs have to be re-installed.
