Field Notes

Description:

A medium sized (some 30-35cm in height) owl, with a rufous coat mottled with grey and flecked with white. In front (or underparts) buff with brown specks. White to pale brown heart shaped facial disc, no ears.

Habitat:

The family or the group portrayed here were observed in their day shelter - situated under the roof of our office in Moussoro, Bahr-el-Gazal. The environment was semi-urban in semi-desert area.

Notes:

Judging by the range, portrayed here is Tyto alba affinis subspecies, occurring in all sub-Saharan Africa - a bit darker than the paler european Tyto alba alba.
