Field Notes

Description:

Very large grayish brown colored insect. Appears to have two wings, six legs, two antennae and two pincer like protrusions from head. Wings have a patterned variation to them.

Habitat:

We found this insect on the outside brick wall of our playground at approximately 10:30 a.m. on June 16, 2017. My students were absolutely fascinated and are eager to learn more about this insect.

Notes:

Please help us identify the species. Thank you so much!

Species ID Suggestions

Eastern Dobsonfly male

Corydalus cornutus

Comments (1)

This is a male Dobsonfly, Corydalus sp. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dobsonfly Those large pincers are used to hold the female during mating. More info about Dobsonflies is available on this page, but I cannot say that this one is the same species: http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/misc/eastern_dobsonfly.htm
