Description:

Gray stick insect about 3 1/2 inches long. When it felt threatened by my iPhone (taking pictures), it reared up as seen in the first image. All have been rotated as it was vertical on the side of a barn. Video at https://youtu.be/RIcux-AHmLM

Habitat:

chaparral in my backyard.
