Field Notes

Description:

The Garden Snail has a distinctive coiled shell that is usually brown or yellowish with darker spiral bands, and the shell was about 40 mm in diameter. The snail's body (not shown here because it entered its aestival quiscence) is soft and slimy, grayish-brown in color, with two pairs of tentacles. The upper pair carries the eyes, while the lower pair is used for smelling.

Habitat:

Helix aspersa is native to the Mediterranean region but has been introduced to many parts of the world, and it thrives in various habitats, particularly in gardens, vineyards, and agricultural areas. Here, observed on shores of a stream called Valserine, in a valley inside Jura range, in a shaded environment of Jura's mixed forests.
