Field Notes

Description:

A lovely pair of banded Spittlebug adults, one with red eyes and one with a more black-red colored eye. About 1.5 cm long. Family Cercopidae. The nymphs of this family typically bury themselves in a thick ball of foamy spittle so they can feed on plant sap unmolested by predators. See this spotting for a picture of the spittle. It is also quite sticky. (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/2000906002/fullscreen)

Habitat:

Forest, Chorreadero Park, Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas, Mexico.
