Two-spined Spider
Poecilopachys australasia
-36.0443, 150.137
Field Notes
Description:
Female spider, about 7 mm. Hiding (but obvious because of colouring) underneath leaf of a fig tree. Stationary and difficult to disturb. Appeared to be guarding two pale brown, spindle-shaped egg sacs suspended by web between leaves.
Habitat:
Low woodland between coastal lake (Coila Lake) and ocean. Woodland dominated by Allocasuarina and Banksia (B. serrata and B. integrifolia) with some littoral rainforest elements, including Ficus rubiginosa.
Notes:
Over the three days I observed the individual, one of the egg sacs hatched.
