Field Notes

Description:

One of the smaller Old World vultures, about 75cm in length. Brown body, with white nape and head, and pinkish naked face - flushing red when excited or alerted - in pic No 2, the origin of that face-flush would probably be me (even though I kept myself at respectable distance)...

Habitat:

The group of four was seen landing on sandy beaches and brackish lagoons close to Freetown, in mangrove ecosystem - coastal ecosystem composed mainly of Red Mangrove tree (Rhizophora mangle, pic No 6).
