Deptford is a town in the south of England where the plant grew in such abundance that it became the source of its common name. Dianthus from Greek words Rios (godly), and anthos (flower) Armenia is Latinized from the old French name armoires for a cluster headed Dianthus.
Thank you so much for this picture with identification! I've been trying to figure out what this flower was for a couple years now.
