Field Notes
Description:
The Long-Eared Owl is a medium sized owl which is approximately 35 centimeters long (around 13 inches) and weighs 8-15 ounces. It is called long eared because of the tuft of feather on its head that look like ears.
Habitat:
Found in dense wooded area, near open fields. This bird hunts in open fields at night, and roosts in very dense cover very near where it hunts.
Notes:
The pictures are of 3 of the at least 14 Long-eared Owls that roosted together this winter. Please note that the map location is simply placed to show they roosted in Southeastern Wisconsin. Long-eared Owls are the only Owl that I know of that roost communally ( in groups).
