Black-browed Reed Warbler
Acrocephalus bistrigiceps
43.1923, 132.013
Field Notes
Description:
Medium to small sized old world reed warbler. 13-14cm long and weighing in around 7-11gms. Mid brown dorsal surface, lightening to a fawn/cream on breast and belly. Diagnostic broad white supercilium with a well defined black brow and a much finer black eye stripe. Lower mandible is yellow and when singing this species displays a bright yellow gape.
Habitat:
Quite common in its range. It summers in eastern Asia from central China through to southern Russia and into Japan. Oddly it is very scarce in Korea. It winters further south in SE Asia. This bird was seen displaying just outside Vladivostok in southern Russia. It was in disused scrub land outside the airport.
Notes:
Although a fairly plain little bird, this guy was very vocal and singing up a storm!
