Field Notes

Description:

A brown marine algae that forms a flat encrusting layer, firmly attached to the substrate; it is irregularly circular in outline, often lobed at the margin, 2-12 cm. in diameter, 0.5-1.0 cm. thick, and olive brown to black in colour with a smooth texture.

Habitat:

Found in the middle intertidal zone on rocks at Tongue Point Marine Sanctuary.

Thanks for commenting Machi. Same here. I found it on many of the exposed rocks that weren't covered with seaweed.

Always wondered what these were! I always assumed they were part of a more conspicuous marine algae
