Field Notes

Habitat:

Near a decaying tree which was still standing up. On a small branch growing from the tree similar to the outgrowing of birch roots. Right on the edge of a stream.

Notes:

First beetle of the year!

I looked in a couple of places earlier but couldn't find anything that looked close. When I saw Aaron had suggested Longhorns I took a quick look there and when I couldn't find anything, I back up to superfamily and took a look at Orsodacnidae.

Here's a longshot. http://bugguide.net/node/view/629471 I know nothing about this family, but the overall shape, the antenna, and tarsal claws appear to be a match. BugGuide would be your best bet for a positive ID.

Thank you Aaron, but I think the antennae may be too small for that. It was also about half of the size of a longhorn beetle.
