Field Notes

Description:

Lovely small bird about 10–10·5 cm in length. It has a red stripe from its neck over its eye. Red brown under the tail, black eyes, white chin, black feet and beige white chest. The top of the tail is red.

Habitat:

The Green corridor (Old Malay Railway) Singapore, near Bukit Panjang. High grass.

Notes:

I saw quite a lot of small birds in the high grass darting around and eating the seeds. They were not shy so I could come quite close. I started to take pictures and only later did I realise there were two kind of birds in the grass. There were about 6 Crimson- rumped Waxbill and I saw two Scaly Breasted Munia. They seemed to be together but not mixing up. The two Munias were together and all the Crimson Waxbill also. Very excited as it is not an Asian bird. In singapore there are speculations whether they have escaped from an enclosure or if they are a result of Vesak Day where people release animals into the wild, ( "fangsheng")
