Description:
The "beija-flor-rubi" (Brazilian ruby) is a apodiforme bird of Trochilidae family, also known as "papo-de-fogo" (Chest of fire). Is between 10.8 and 11.3 centimeters long. The male of the species weighs between 7 and 9.2 grams and the female weighs between 5.9 and 7.1 grams. It shows sexual dimorphism.
The male is predominantly green, with reddish tail that gives it the specific epithet rubricauda, stands out for chat ruby color and shimmering green forehead and chest. In the shaded the forest, when at rest, appears a black coloring highlighting the post-ocular white spots.
The female has cinnamon color in the bottom of the body, green head and back and also has the white spots behind the eyes.
Habitat:
Territorialist, does not allow other birds (except the partner) and even pollinating insects to approach their feed sources, usually one or more flowers. Inhabits the forest, wooded gardens and banana plantations.
