Lynx Spider
Oxyopes javanus
15.456, 119.922
Field Notes
Description:
Oxyopidae; Oxyopes javanus Thorell, 1887. The first time I saw a Lynx Spider (a few years ago, when I was becoming interested in the biodiversity of the Philippines), I mistook it for a jumping spider. Of course, I very quickly learned to look at the eyes because jumpers have a unique eye arrangement which is very different from that of the Lynx. Even now, from a distance, I sometimes think "jumper" until I get close enough to see the spines on the legs. As far as I know, no jumping spider has those amazing spiny legs. So, even if the eyes cannot be seen (if the spider is facing away) it is pretty much impossible to see the spider, at all, without seeing the legs. I think that makes this spider one of the easiest to identify.
Habitat:
This Lynx Spider was spotted in our backyard on a Painted Nettle (Plectranthus scutellarioides) known as Mayana in the Philippines. Plant identification - http://www.stuartxchange.org/Mayana
