Field Notes

Description:

Very small black, red-eyed Flower Fly which mimics small black wasps. Many landed on our arms and hands for the salt from our sweat. They are about 5 mm long. They are kind of pestiferous, but harmless. This seems to be a male based on the contiguous eyes. Family Syrphidae.

Habitat:

Along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, Km 11.5, Chiapas, Mexico.
